Glucose Tolerance Test: English

Report to the Laboratory Department on first floor of or to the appropriate clinic as directed. You should arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment time in order to be registered.

Purpose of test:

This test is used to diagnose disorders such as diabetes mellitus and hypoglycemia or “low blood sugar.”

Do not eat or drink anything other than water after the day before your test. You should fast at least 12 hours prior to the test.

The morning of the test, do not eat, drink (including coffee), smoke, or chew gum before coming to the lab. You may have small amounts of water.

Arrive at the hospital between and .

Be prepared to stay 3-5 hours, depending on the test your physician ordered.

At the end of the test, you may eat drink, smoke and chew gum.

What to Expect:
 
 
 
 
 
 

This test takes between 1 and 5 hours, depending on the test your physician orders. You will have your blood drawn and urine collected. Then you will be given a bottle of a very sugery solution to drink. Urine and blood specimens will be collected again at certain times following ingestion of the drink. The type test your physician orders will determine how many times specimens will be collected. You may feel the common effects of hunger and may feel a little nauseated following ingestion of the drink, due to the sugar content.

After Care:

After your test you may resume your normal activities. Your doctor will discuss the results of the test with you.
