American College of Radiology Standards
The American College of Radiology is the principle organization of radiologists, radiation oncologists, and clinical medical physicists in the United States. The College is a nonprofit professional society whose primary purposes are to advance the science of radiology, improve radiologic services to patients, study the socioeconomic aspects of the practice of radiology, and encourage continuing education.
The ACR develops standards for radiologic practice to help advance the science of radiology and to improve the quality of service to patients throughout the United States. The standards of the ACR are not rules, but are guidelines that attempt to define principles of practice, which should generally produce high-quality radiological care. They are not intended to establish a legal standard of care or conduct, and deviation from a standard does not, in and of itself, indicate or imply that such medical practice is below an acceptable level of care. The ultimate judgment regarding the propriety of any specific procedure or course of conduct must be made by the physician and medical physicist in light of all circumstances presented by the individual situation. The Imaging Department at Cooper Green Mercy Hospital bases its policies and procedures on ACR standards, even though at times deviation, as determined by the radiologist, may be appropriate.
