Laboratory Services

The Cooper Green Mercy Hospital Laboratory is a full-service clinical and diagnostic laboratory focusing on accuracy and efficiency in patient care. Services include blood banking, clinical chemistry, cytology, hematology, histology, mycology, pathology, cytopathology, surgical pathology, and serology. It is in keeping with and in support of the hospital’s mission “to service Jefferson County residents with quality healthcare regardless of the ability to pay” and “to seek continuously to improve our services.”

While the hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the laboratory goes a step further and maintains voluntary accreditation with the College of American Pathologists and the American Association of Blood Banks. Both of these accrediting agencies require professional peer review, education, and compliance with established performance standards. As part of Cooper Green Hospital’s ongoing quality improvement program, the quality and appropriateness of the laboratory’s services is monitored objectively and evaluated systematically to pursue opportunities to improve patient care and to resolve identified problems.

Laboratory testing is available for patients of all ages to authorized healthcare providers, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Service is provided to the hospital, community and hospital based clinics, and Jefferson Clinic. Laboratory testing is available only by physician order.

Laboratory measurements are used by physicians for two purposes: to identify diseases within an individual, and to follow the progress of the disease under medical therapy. The laboratory has the responsibility to provide physicians with an estimate of the variation in the normal population, and to guarantee the reliability of each individual measurement. This is achieved, in part, by our voluntary accreditation with various quality agencies and with our Quality Plan activities, based on the ISO Quality Systems Standard.

Rapid Access to Results

Your physician can access via the Jefferson Health System computer system, virtually all of your test results performed by the Cooper Green Mercy Hospital Laboratory regardless of whether you were an inpatient, emergency room patient or outpatient. Most tests have less than a 12-hour turnaround time.

Special Instructions

Fasting Tests: If your physician tells you to "fast" before your test(s), this means that you should not have anything to eat or drink for a minimum of eight hours before the specimen is drawn. This means no juice, toast or coffee. You are able to have water while you are fasting. Consult with your physician about taking or withholding regular medications.
