Nuclear Medicine Hepatobiliary (Gallbladder) Instructions in English

Where:
 

Report to the Radiology Department on first floor of . You should arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment time in order to be registered.

Purpose:
 

To evaluate the gallbladder and biliary ducts for obstruction and/or other problems.

Preparation:
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Ingest nothing by mouth six hours prior to the test.

Do not fast for longer than 24 hr immediately prior to the test.

Medications: No morphine or opiod drugs should be taken within 12 hours of testing. All other medications may be taken as normal.

Please do not bring children with you to the appointment.

What to Expect:
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Inform the technologist the following information:

ü    Previous surgeries
ü    Current medications
ü    Recent imaging with contrast-containing material
ü    History of prior administration of radiopharmaceuticals
ü Time of most recent meal

 A small needle will be placed in your arm and a small amount of a radioactive medication will be injected.  This medication will pass from the liver into the biliary tree and will allow x-ray pictures to be taken.  You will be lying comfortably on your back for the test while a Gamma Camera, positioned over your body, takes images or pictures for a minimum of 60 minutes.

A Radiologist will evaluate your scan and may request additional images to accurately rule out or confirm an obstruction or other problem.

After Care:

You may resume your normal lifestyle.
