|
Timing of Collection: |
To ensure that a fully qualified technologist will be available to perform the necessary tests on your specimen, you must deliver it -as soon as possible- after collection to the laboratory, with this form, Monday – Friday from . Specimens delivered to the lab at any other time cannot be processed and will require recollection. |

Purpose: |
This test is used to diagnose male infertility and as follow-up to vasectomy. |
|
Instructions: |
Please note the following:
- Collect a semen specimen following a period of sexual abstinence of at least 2 days. (Ejaculation within 2 days prior to collection of the specimen for testing may cause the sperm count to be abnormally low.)
- Select a location for specimen collection that is within 30 minutes of the laboratory. Immediate delivery to the lab is essential. (Sperm outside the body die very quickly.)
- The specimen should be produced by masturbation. No lubricant, including saliva, may be used, as they may kill sperm.
- A condom should not be worn. Powder or lubricants applied to the condom or other material used in their manufacture may kill sperm.
- Collect semen into a clean glass jar with no residue of soap or detergent, or suitable plastic container provided by the hospital. Container must be labeled with your name and date and time of collection.
- Transport the specimen to the laboratory immediately. Carry the container close to your body, under the arm, or in a pocket to keep it as close to body temperature as possible. (A temperature higher or lower than body temperature will cause a decrease in motility of the sperm.)
